Mesilla Basin/Conejos-Medanos Basin Aquifer

The Mesilla Basin/Conejos Médanos aquifer underlies the U.S. states of New Mexico and Texas and the Mexican state of Chihuahua.  Scientists from universities in New Mexico through the New Mexico Water Resources Research Institute (NMWRRI), New Mexico State University, Texas through the Texas AgriLife Research, Texas Water Resources  Institute (TWRI), Texas A&M University System, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), and state agencies and organizations, in collaboration and/or coordination with scientists from Mexico, will work together to collect and evaluate new and existing data to develop high-quality, comprehensive groundwater quantity and quality information and groundwater flow model(s) for the Mesilla Basin/ Conejos-Médanos aquifers.

The binational team prepared a report in 2011 to collect information in the southern portion of the Mesilla Bolson/Conejos Medanos aquifer in Mexico.  The study was conducted to gain a better understanding of this aquifer due to its importance as a water supply for both countries.  The information was compiled and shared between both countries and a repository was also established at the IBWC.  The link to the report is provided and the Geographic Information System web portal will be added to the site in the near future.
