BROWNSVILLE BACTERIA STUDY IN THE RIO GRANDE (3 min 4 sec)

The International Boundary and Water Commission, U.S. Section, Texas Clean Rivers Program conducted a bacteria special study in the Rio Grande near Brownsville, Texas, in 2010 in coordination with the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality and the University of Texas at Brownsville. The study was to determine possible sources of contamination that are causing elevated levels of bacteria in the Rio Grande which have led to the stretch of the Rio Grande in Brownsville to be designated as impaired for contact recreation. Our study found that bacteria levels have actually been improving, likely due to major local wastewater infrastructure improvement projects funded by NADBank. A final report of the study is available on our Studies webpage at ibwc.gov/CRP/studies.htm.
